What do the bio-medical waste bag colours mean in India?
Under India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (as amended), yellow bags take human and animal anatomical waste, soiled waste, expired medicines and chemical waste; red takes contaminated recyclable plastic such as tubing, catheters and gloves; white translucent puncture-proof containers take sharps; and blue cardboard boxes with blue marking take glassware and metallic implants. Bags must be non-chlorinated plastic and labelled with the bio-hazard symbol.
Which category does each bag serve?
Yellow: anatomical waste, soiled dressings, cotton contaminated with blood or body fluids, expired or discarded medicines, chemical waste and laboratory cultures.
Red: contaminated recyclable waste generated from disposable items such as tubing, bottles, intravenous tubes and sets, catheters, urine bags, syringes without needles and gloves.
White: sharps including needles, syringes with fixed needles, scalpels and blades, in a translucent puncture-proof and leak-proof container.
Blue: broken or discarded and contaminated glass including medicine vials and ampoules, and metallic body implants.
What does a compliant bag itself have to be?
Non-chlorinated plastic, of sufficient strength for the waste category and transport route, and marked with the bio-hazard symbol and the required label. Facilities should also confirm the bag thickness their common bio-medical waste treatment facility accepts, since this is where most rejections originate.
